Public Works Engineering
through the Development section, Addressing and Road Naming, provides
a service to county residents, emergency response units, and delivery
services. 
The accurate numbering and naming of streets within Whatcom
County allows Fire Departments, delivery drivers, residents, and
visitors easy access and location of each business and residence
within the county.
Each year over 1,300 road name or address assignments or corrections
occur. A major part of the workload for this unit is correction
of address errors. The county has developed an address grid that
each home and business fits into identifying its particular house
number.
This unit primarily associates with private citizens
and commercial businesses but also provides a service to emergency
response and delivery services by providing correct, logical, and
identifiable addressing throughout the County. The lack of duplicate
addresses will ensure that emergency vehicles locate the correct
address as quickly as possible. Adherence to the Whatcom County
Fire Code requirement for clearly posted and readable house numbers
allows these same emergency vehicles, as well as delivery companies,
friends, and relatives of Whatcom County residents, clear access
to locations.
